Summary
In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her ''little problem'' taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the ''Queen of Spies'', who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

Great reading sometimes could not wait to continue. Intelligent and stlll full of suspense - great narrator who lets the characters grow before your ears. Loved it.

I thought the storyline was good but I found the narration grated on me sometimes, the voices (accents) didn't always sound natural . Maybe would have benefitted from having male and female narrators.

Crude and Vulgar. The characters had the morals of a dog.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. The writing is a kind of first person experience from different people over different time periods. The narration is well executed!

Enthralling story, beautifully narrated. Story articulates the complex beauty and tragedy in life especially during the World Wars. It highlights courage, cleverness, loyalty and compassion. It inspires resilience and the ability to overcome.

All a bit of a cliché but still an interesting story. The characters were stereotypical of their kind but the narrator did a good job.

The narrator did an amazing job! And this might have just become my favorite Kate Quinn book!

Slow start. I wanted to give up so many times but after you finally make it through the weird bits you understand more and it gets more interesting. I will say I was pleased that it finally picked up. Good piece to go to in order to combat boredom.

Excellent book and an eye opener for learning about the critical, important and often overlooked role women played in the history of World War 1 and World War 2. The characters are well developed and I will never forget their strength, resilience and courage. An added bonus is how talented the narrator was at bringing a voice to these unforgettable characters!

My mom recommended this multiple times and I was taking a break from war romances (my favorite genre) but I’m sooooo glad she persisted. Why this book isn’t a movie I have no idea. It is so well written you will be swept up into the story from the get go. And, The characters are each so flawed you will love them. The narrator was the perfect choice!

A spectacular historical fiction. I could not put it down. It gets into the nitty gritty of spying as a woman. I also enjoyed the narrator.

Book was really good but Narrator should not try to sound like a male. Other wise she was doing a great job.

Clever convergence of plot lines. The pairing of old spy and college-age mom-to-be was less so. How valued were these spies any way? Support with facts instead of pathos. Finally, why didn’t the bombing of the train succeed?

This was a literal "can't put it down" novel. Really good. It has one of the best literary villians I have come across in a long time too.

I chose this book in the hopes of being able to make a recommendation for my mother-in-law’s Christian book club after their raving review of another war-time novel. As much as I enjoyed it myself, I didn’t feel it would be an appropriate recommendation due to its graphic crudeness. I could definitely have done without Charlie’s chapters as I found her character profoundly annoying and resented being constantly pulled away from Eve’s thrilling storyline. Overall, however, a fascinating read!

I love this author, so I enjoyed this book immensely. The narrator is exceptionally talented. As she darts through the different accents, it really helps engage in the story.

Alice Network I really liked this book. I enjoy reading about women's roles in the wars. Just goes to prove that women can do so much there than what is expected of us, still to this day.

This does an excellent job of keeping a brisk pace while still giving details to create a mental picture of each scene. The intertwining of the two timelines is balanced and they add to the intrigue of the other. I have recommended this book to anyone who will listen!

I enjoyed the story but being British found some of the pronunciations difficult eg. Khaki and enquires. This was only my third audio book so I am still getting used to hearing books in other voices than my own in my head..

The book was good and I enjoyed reading about the history of the wars and scenery of France. I did not like the character of the American girl and I did not like reading about all their drinking and sex.

Profile Avatar
Maggie M.

I enjoyed the story and the narration. I loved the French accents and picturesque images you formed as you rode through France with the narrator. The story of the spies was fascinating but the other story was boring and a little annoying. I kept waiting to get back to the spies. Worth the read but could’ve cut the girl from the states out and finished the story.

Profile Avatar

Intriguing book from beginning to end. The author doesn’t give everything away all at once and the book is very well written. Narrator is excellent, almost like a radio drama
