Summary
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Lauded Star Wars author James Luceno returns to pen an intense tale of ambition and betrayal that sets the stage for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

War is tearing the galaxy apart. For years the Republic and the Separatists have battled across the stars, each building more and more deadly technology in an attempt to win the war. As a member of Chancellor Palpatine’s top secret Death Star project, Orson Krennic is determined to develop a superweapon before the Republic’s enemies can. And an old friend of Krennic’s, the brilliant scientist Galen Erso, could be the key.

Galen’s energy-focused research has captured the attention of both Krennic and his foes, making the scientist a crucial pawn in the galactic conflict. But after Krennic rescues Galen, his wife, Lyra, and their young daughter, Jyn, from Separatist kidnappers, the Erso family is deeply in Krennic’s debt. Krennic then offers Galen an extraordinary opportunity: to continue his scientific studies with every resource put utterly at his disposal. While Galen and Lyra believe that his energy research will be used purely in altruistic ways, Krennic has other plans that will finally make the Death Star a reality. Trapped in their benefactor’s tightening grasp, the Ersos must untangle Krennic’s web of deception to save themselves and the galaxy itself.

Excellent insight into the background of some of the main characters in the movie. Love the interactions between Tarkin and krennic. This book is basically the runway on which the movie takes off. Excellent!

Well read, but there was little movement and no consequential story advancement in this novel. It merely tells the tale of the Erso Family as a prequel to Rogue One with little intrigue or insight about the rebellion

Story 4.5 Catalyst was recommended in a EU subreddit and I am glad it was. R1 is my favorite Star Wars movie that isn’t ESB and I am enjoying the world building around it. I like character driven works so it was fun to get to know The Erso Family and the origins of the coverup story of the Deathstar. The narration was superb with no cringy voices. I’m excited to dive into more of James Luceno’s EU.

The first half is extremely good

Chapters aren’t even remotely accurate. Makes the book impossible to follow and keep track of progress.

I've read dozens of Star Wars books over the past 25 years. This was the least eventful and least engaging.

Great background on Galen and Lyra, but the book is basically to see how naïve Galen is...

Story of intrigue. Good setup for Rogue One. Good narrator.

Enjoyed the book especially with the release of rogue one days after I finished reading/listening. Not an amazing book but it has an enjoyable back story and character building. As usual there are sound effects so beware of this if you are listening while in an ambient environment. Scared the piss out of me while driving.

Great book! Highly recommend you read this before seeing the Rogue One movie!!

I'm a big James Luceno fan, but my sense is he didn't have much to work with here. 2.5 stars for me.

Awsome. Great precursor to the new movie, Rogue One. A must 'listen' before seeing the movie.

As per usual, nothing groundbreaking happens in this book. No massive revelations occur and honestly, most of the story told could be assumed to have happened. But... That isn't to say that this book is bad. If you want to get to know Orson Krennic and Galen Erso and their relationship previous to Rogue One... then I highly recommend this book. If you love Star Wars and want to read an immersive character study... then I highly recommend this book. Overall it's a fun lot of betray, intrigue, and stage setting for what will hopefully be an amazing movie. As per usual, the narration and direction are spot on. Well done.

Great book! For sure a must read before Rogue One.

I would rather listen to this book than sniff farts.

Profile Avatar Steven Hunnie Nov 2016

Great book! Superb look into industrial and political espionage and military manoeuvring in the Star Wars galaxy. Narration is also wonderful but only gets a four because they really to include one female along with the male narrator, just to do the female voices...would help our imaginations go further down the rabbit hole. A must read book.

A solid book and, as per usual, great narration.

A great book leading up to an amazing movie. May the Force be with you.
