Summary
NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling.

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family-and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Good book. Audio quality must have been fixed after some of these other reviews. No skipping in 2020.

Always a great read. Been a very long time since I read the book and listening this time made for a wonderful experience. I did not give a 5 star only because I encountered moments when the playback stuttered and I could understand what was said. It may be a product of my connection but I have not experienced it with my other books. Fantastic book!

Like so many others have said before, the story is great, the narrators/actors are great, but the skipping and jumping in the audio is terrible. Poor quality oversight on this. Audio starts skipping and repeating no less than 15-20 times throughout the book. Enjoy the story, but be cautioned on the quality of the file being used.

TECHNICAL ISSUES: - Data artifacts causing lots of record scratching type sounds ARTISTIC ISSUES: - They switch between the narrator doing all the voices and a series of voice actors, which I find unnecessarily confusing Otherwise, incredible book.

The narrator and production are actually EXCELLENT, but this copy is TERRIBLE. It was clearly recorded from a CD, skips and all, and there are entire minute long sections where it just skips back on itself for a while. Dune is amazing. This audio production is amazing. But the copy of it on this app is unacceptable. Avoid It!

Just wow! This is what fiction is supposed to be! This work approaches such perfection that it is mind boggling to me. It seems to me that it is above criticism, that if you were to try it would be like trying to point out a flaw in a Hieronymus Bosch painting. Can you be so sure that what you see is a flaw? Or is the flaw your own inability to understand that one part? Anyway I am gobsmacked by the quality of this writing. I’m sci-fi fantasy there is always the danger that when you invent made-up words, that the writing will sound like gobbledygook. Herbert skillfully avoids this pitfall in ways I can’t even understand. What a master! The narration was mostly good. I can’t give it anything less than 5/5, as on the whole this is a 30/5 production.

Great book, a masterpiece of literature. This version is filled with audio errors. It sounds as if someone ripped this book from a scratched CD. Quality, 1/5.

No audio issues. Overall production values were very good. Now I want to listen to Dune Messiah and Children of Dune (hint hint).

Great book and narration. I was worried about the audio problems mentioned in other reviews but took a chance based on reviews that indicated the problem was fixed. No problems with the recording for me. I also liked the production of this audio book that included some background sounds/music. This is not something included in many audio books I have listened to but I felt it was done well and made the experience more immersive.

Great book! Love all the voices and sound bits. Problems mentioned in other comments must have been fixed. Nothing but smooth sailing and good sound in my read trough.

I've been a lover of the Dune series for decades. I found the narration a bit confusing at times. It was hard to figure out who was talking.

Profile Avatar
Markovox

Very entertaining as it is not narrated by one but several narrators. However for non English native listeners level of English language is quite advanced and at certain points at high speed of narration difficult to understand.

Wonderful story, laughable narration choices.

Amazing story! I loved how it had background music and effects, really helped get the feel for the space age setting. I read it and had my friends read it now we are all awaiting the second part of the movie

First time read of Dune, and first time listen too. The narrators were amazing, no audio skipping or jumping, so it must have been fixed? I was hooked from the first sentence. Absolutely recommend.

I must say the books are ten times better than the earlier film depictions of the book. As always a deep dive into the development of characters are key to bringing in the reader or audience. The only thing that had me lost a bit was the time jump. rolling into book two, excited to see what comes of the rise of Arrakis

Just awful storyline.

Read it as a teenager when it first came out. Audiobooks with multiple narrators change the experience especially when listening occurs while driving through a rain downpour in a forest, I loved the paper version and enjoyed the audio and now will watch the movie.

One of the greatest books of all time. So relevant, timeless, philosophical and entertaining. Where are the Frank Herbert’s of today.

Great Audio Book

Profile Avatar

The book is good, alittle hard to follow with the random narration by other people. Simon Vance is an amazing narrator and listen I feel would have been better if he had done all of it.

Profile Avatar

The audio quality was terribly imbalanced. Sometimes the narration would do the voices. Other times guest speakers would play the character, and the mic volume for them is almost twice as high! It led to loud-quiet-loud listening with terrible inconsistency in which person was voicing who. It’s a terrific book, but terribly handled by the production team. Find a different version to listen to.

Excellent world building. Intelligent charachters. Great all around storytelling. Get it if you're on the fence.

Great voiceovers and love the story! One of the best non-fictions out there. Don’t judge it by the movie. The book is leaps and bounds better. I didn’t have trouble with the copy like others mentioned.

I didnt expect it to be so bad. Maybe ill finish it to prove im smart and tell everyone its great so they have to go through this too.

Book's a classic, nothing I can add there. But the nerration is excellent. Well paced and engaging. If you've read the book you know there's quite a bit of description about tones of voice and the way in which things are said. The voice actors nailed it.

Profile Avatar

all voice talents are excellent. I even prefer the barons voice and presence here over the one in the movie. I wish it would consistently use voices throughout the book

i loved the 80’s movie as a kid, and decided to start reading the books after the new film came out. gotta say that i am pretty impressed with the world building and narration, and can’t wait to start the next book.

Not for me. I get kind of bored with politics talk for 3 hours straight

Profile Avatar

Great book and cool narration. About half the chapters have actors - those are the best. Unsure why they didn't do the whole book?

Profile Avatar

Good story, but bad recording. Voice actors come and go for some chapters and some pages are being skipped completely. The narrator speaks well. I don’t mind the background music/sounds too much. I think it goes well with the story and keeps it interesting.

Profile Avatar

I loved the book. It helped me understand the movie better as well. Loved the music and changing narrators which helped keep me engaged.

A science fiction classic!! Incredible density of world building. Love this series.

Profile Avatar

was a great story and the narrators were done exceptional well, I seen reviews mentioning skipping did not experience any but on other books I did have that issue but was found that once downloaded doesn't so the skipping is most likely a connection issue. Really enjoyed this book I will definitely revisit in the future.

Profile Avatar

Great book and narration. Only jarring thing was how the narrators for some characters randomly changed

Profile Avatar

Cool immersion but it was very hard to follow as you don't get a sense for when events take place years...min...hours... days. but overall story is pretty much GOT without sex and action. However the lore was really cool and certain scenes will stay with me for a long time. I'm considering reading the next books but I probably won't. Still worth reading!

Very annoying. More than one voice actor doing the same character. You’d hear the voice change mid-scene in some cases. Awesome book but terrible narration.

An excellent space epic woven with themes from every age of history. From "witches" to energy shields, from space travel to bone knives, Dune tells a deep story in a detailed world.

Hands down my new favorite sci-fi novel. I wanted to listen to this before the release of the film adaptation slated to release later this year, and boy am I glad I did! A gripping tale that will leave you teetering on the edge of your seats for most of it. My only complaint is that some voice actors appear to change mid-read, causing some confusion during parts of dialogue, especially between Howat and Baron Harkonen towards the end.

Profile Avatar

I don’t read a lot of sci-fi but took a chance on what I’ve been told is a classic. It didn’t disappoint. Some parts were a little long, but the narration more than compensates. Listening to an audiobook with only one voice of won’t be as satisfying after a book like this with a great cast.

Profile Avatar

This is amazing. The book has all the properties of a great page-turner and many of the earmarks of great literature. The main narrator is really all you need, but actors playing the other characters, especially Princess Irulan and Baron Harkonnen, are especially convincing.

I've enjoyed this book for decades now, re-reading it every four or five years. I give it only a four for the same reasons mentioned below. Also, I noticed that, in at least one place (at the end of the second last chapter), the text of the book was left out of the reading - I was following along with the book. Also, I found the interludes within some of the chapters (ambiance music or context related sounds) were both unnecessary and ill placed. But, aside from that, on the whole, the readers did a good job. I did find that Mr. Brick had a hard time with being consistent with the voices of the various characters, especially Gurney Halleck. Bottom line, it's worth getting and listening to.

Profile Avatar

Of the more than 230 novels I've read throughout the years, this one was undoubtedly the best by an unimaginable margin. I don't know how to begin detailing my love for Dune. Somewhat glitchy recording of an otherwise neat-excellent narration.

Profile Avatar
Christopher l

I downloaded using very good wifi. This helped with any skipping, yet there still were parts that skipped. Unavoidable. The book itself is amazing.

Profile Avatar
Antonis E

While the book and the voice acting are excellent, this audiobook is plagued by technical issues such as audio glitches and skipping.

Profile Avatar
Karel B

Rinse and repeat: The book is a classic and the narration is excelent. But there are skips and distortions and missing paragraphs that to someone who never read the book might even distort the understanding.

Profile Avatar
Lauren H

Holy smokes I love this book!

Profile Avatar
Coni Y

I loved the book and the movie. Sadly this version is very of poor quality due to skips and distortion. Was a number of spots that where parts were lost completely.

Profile Avatar

Book and narrations were excellent audio skips a lot for the price look for another copy

Profile Avatar
Eric Letourneau

The book itself was amazing. However there is a lot of trouble with the quality. It skipped a lot....

Profile Avatar
mason roberts

This recording skips at :55 and at 2:12, hopefully it can be replaced with a good copy? The production and reading are excellent otherwise.

Profile Avatar
Mariejoe Chahine

Good narration! It has some glitches though and sometimes it's hard to know which character is talking since it sometimes changes. If it wasnt for these issues it would've been perfect!

Profile Avatar
Paul Pickering

The writer weaves a great tale that spans about a generation. Way ahead of its time and still has a nice current feel. The narration is excellent but there are many characters so following the story can be a little more difficult when just listening to the audio. There was some technical issue in the recording so various period had annoying skips in the story.

Profile Avatar

read many times. favorite book. this recording was a bit disconcerting with skips in the audio, as the details of interplay are so often vital to the depths of the story. also disconcerting was the random interspersed narrative of different voice actors and the main narrator. book 5. narration 3.

Profile Avatar
David Breeden

Dune is a classic but having different voice actors is a bit confusing in a few places. Also, the recording skios in a few places.

Profile Avatar
Tim Johnson

love the many voice actors, but book skips horribly in several places.

Profile Avatar
Rami Aboulhosn

Great listen. It has random glitches but they are rare and far in between. Would have been a 5 for narration otherwise. Looking forward to listening to the entire series.

Profile Avatar

I have always loved the movie but had never read the book. I chose to listen to Dune as my first book with the credit I got with my subscription. I found it to be a very entertaining listen. I am going to be sure to purchase a hard copy of this novel and probably the whole series. The book itself is a five star novel for sure. I would have given the narration five stars but there was some playback stutter that occurred and one character was narrated by two different people so his voice was not always the same but it was a minor issue and not one that caused any confusion. On the whole I thought it was a well narrated book with a pleasant voice and good character representation. I look forward to listening to the rest of the Dune series.

Profile Avatar

Different people narrating the same character is somewhat disconcerting. Besides these concerns, a good listen.

As a young teen I avoided watching the new movie "Dune". I was not a big reader at the time either. This is a wonderful book and excellent reading. The one thing that kept cracking me up and breaking my concentration was hearing Scott Sowers voice as Gurney Halleck. Every time Gurney spoke I heard Hunter S. Thompson speaking from inside the Hell's Angels. That was a great audiobook too. I am now hooked and will listen to the rest of Frank Herbert's novels and probably his son's additions too.

Profile Avatar

I love the narrator and all the voice actors. I'd give this five stars but not all the chapters utilized the voice actors, and some voice actors were used for multiple characters, which can feel slightly strange although the director team reallocated these actors well enough. Highly recommend!!!

Profile Avatar
Stryktor D.

One of the best I listened to

Profile Avatar
Ang A.

The book is as it is, a decent story of psychedelic detritus and space marines. But omg the collection of narrators on this version are basically a campy cast of basic accents befitting an 80s cartoon.

Profile Avatar

Lots of detail and way ahead of the movie.

Profile Avatar

It's Dune. It is a classic. I think it, along with all of the previous reviews, speaks for itself. My only real complaints are if you set your thoughts too high, you could get disappointed. Also, this audio book doesn't really harness the cast ALL of the time. Sometimes that's a good thing. Sometimes it is not.Regardless, it was enjoyable to this listener. It will likely be so for you
