Summary
'The 50th book proves this series truly is the gold standard.” — Associated Press

In the latest thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, homicide detective Eve Dallas investigates a murder with a mysterious motive—and a terrifying weapon.

Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body—and killed him.

After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team—and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn’t been exposed—it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close—though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless. While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she’s dealing with either a madman—or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims.

Very boring. Couldn’t get past 12 minutes. Narrator’s voice irritating!

It’s my first time read of this author, didn’t love it.

This is a whodunnit suspense story with a very, very long list of suspects and a suspect narrator . I had no chance of keeping all the suspects straight which substantially diminished the storyline. Had I actually read this story, I’m sure I would’ve backtracked frequently to verify who was who. I listen at work and a good read and good narrator will hold my attention. As an audio book playing in the background while at work, I struggled to finish.

This is my first time trying to read an Eve Dallas, couldn't finish it, talk about hackneyed, ugh. And no idea why this narrator is so highly rated, half the time she sounds patronizing, and the other half hokey. Hokey and hackneyed, gah!

I liked it very much

It does not live up to the high rating. The narrator is one of the worst I have listened to.

Pretty good. I stayed engaged until the end.

As this was the first out of the series that I listened to, a lot of things didn’t add up. I thought it was strange to call a TV a screen, a watch a wrist unit, a cell phone a link, etc. Really had trouble with the narrator as the voices didn’t really match what you would envision the characters to sound like, and the cadence of the conversations just was not normal conversation. I probably will not listen to one of the books by this author or narrator again.

Always enjoy Susan Ericksen’s narrations - the book itself was enjoyable enough that I will try other Eve Dallas stories by this author.

It was ok

I’ve been listening to this book for about an hour and it’s really hard to figure out who’s talking because the narrator sounds nearly the same for each character. Also, a woman’s voice for the main character, who is a man, makes it even more unappealing. I also don’t like the language used. I finally gave up.

Great story! I love the interesting characters! I recommend this read.

Thank goodness it was free. I almost had to stop listening.

Boring as hell. Grade school writing abilities. Abominable skills at story telling. Amateur writer. A high school teacher would give this claptrap a C minus.

Love ALL the In death series books. Susan Erickson is the best narrator I have ever heard. She brings all the characters in the books to life. It’s like your watching a movie with your eyes closed!

I love the In Death Series and I really like this one as well. I could not stop listening to it. Can’t wait for the next book!

The book was interesting and kept the excitement up as JD Robb always does. Eve seems to be getting more sentimental. While I have never been a narrator and this is only my 2nd Audiobook I did not care for the narration. While I appreciate her attempts at accents they just did not ring true for the characters.
