‘Even in the darkest of Dickens novels, no family comes across quite as mendacious, grasping and avaricious as the Trumps’ Financial Times

A REVELATORY PORTRAIT OF DONALD J. TRUMP AND THE TOXIC FAMILY THAT MADE HIM – WRITTEN BY HIS NIECE, MARY L. TRUMP

Mary Trump spent much of her childhood in her grandparents’ large, imposing house in New York with Donald and his four siblings. She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse. As a first-hand witness and a trained clinical psychologist, Mary explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who occupied the Oval Office.

Written by the only Trump willing to speak out, Too Much and Never Enough is a fascinating and unnerving analysis on one of the world’s most powerful and dysfunctional families. Mary Trump’s insight and intimate familiarity means she alone can tell the truth on what makes Donald, and the rest of her clan, tick.

The book actually made me feel a bit sorry for Donald Trump. His childhood was grim and unfortunately led to the deeply flawed and unstable man he is today. The author states that she has written it as she does not want her uncle elected again, but i don't think that this book will really change many minds. I think that he is a terrible person but this book at least gave some context as to why. The main part of the book is centered on Trump's father, Fred and his toxic legacy. Money is everything to this family. Trump's mum doesn't come out of it very well either. The author obviously has her own bias but i also think that she has done her best to be fair and give an honest account of the whole Trump family. She and her brother were cut out of the grandfathers will for no good reason and i suspect she is understandably settling a few scores by writing this book as well as genuinely wanting the world to know how unfit for office her uncle is. She is a clinical psychologist so has not really gone for the scandal aspect of the Trump dynasty but the book is peppered with juicy bits of information on Trump's follies. The author narrates the book and she has a nice voice and i really hope that writing this has helped her too

A frank and honest account of the family dysfunction and its consequences. Good for Mary!

I really enjoyed Mary Trump's down-to-earth, no-nonsense recounting of her life in the Trump family. She was never mean or petty in her descriptions of the characters notwithstanding how much she has suffered at the hands of this cruel heartless family. Fred Trump appears as a feelingless monster who succeeded in brainwashing his whole family, wife included, manipulating their psyche and twisting their emotions. As a result, their collective contempt and lack of humanity for the eldest son (and Mary Trumpìs father) Freddy was truly brutal. What shocked me most was the shameful indifference of his mother. I think that, all in all, Mary Trump was pretty soft on her uncle, Donald, providing, in her professional capacity as a clinical psychologist, all the reasons why he turned out as he did. I also enjoyed her narration and would be happy to listen to another of her books.
