Summary
'[Oprah Winfrey and Bruce D. Perry] are both capable, likable narrators who are sincerely engaged with their subject matter...The performances of these two humanitarians make this a must-hear for anyone recovering from their traumatic past.' —AudioFile

This program is read by the authors.

Our earliest experiences shape our lives far down the road, and What Happened to You? provides powerful scientific and emotional insights into the behavioral patterns so many of us struggle to understand.

“Through this lens we can build a renewed sense of personal self-worth and ultimately recalibrate our responses to circumstances, situations, and relationships. It is, in other words, the key to reshaping our very lives.”—Oprah Winfrey

This audiobook is going to change the way you see your life.

Have you ever wondered 'Why did I do that?' or 'Why can't I just control my behavior?' Others may judge our reactions and think, 'What's wrong with that person?' When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question.

Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Here, Winfrey shares stories from her own past, understanding through experience the vulnerability that comes from facing trauma and adversity at a young age. In conversation throughout the audiobook, she and Dr. Perry focus on understanding people, behavior, and ourselves. It’s a subtle but profound shift in our approach to trauma, and it’s one that allows us to understand our pasts in order to clear a path to our future—opening the door to resilience and healing in a proven, powerful way.

This book holds life altering information for anyone dealing with our children or adults who have dealt with trauma-and who hasn’t?! If our educators were required to understand this vital information it could transform how they deal with our injured children without putting them on unnecessary meditations! A must read for educators or anyone wanting to understand people in general.

Excellent book. Everyone should listen to this to better understand ourselves and others. The stories are moving and many can relate to them in some form or another. Both Opra and Dr. Perry were great narrators. I am grateful for the groundbreaking work Dr. Perry did to understand how the brain processes trauma.

This book has made it into my Top 3 so far. It feels intimate and insightful. The conversation style makes it feel more like a podcast than a book but yet, it is rich in information and interesting data related to the brain, healing and trauma. I loved it. The narrators have great engaging voices and when the switch between “heavier” content and stories makes the materials discussed more digestible and relatable. Absolute gem of a book.

Worthwhile. Two take aways about giving others permission to treat us a certain way and Oprah’s definition of forgiveness.

Found this book very helpful and illuminating. Understanding the neuroscience behind the traumatic response explains a lot. If you can understand what your going through and from where it originates you can learn how to tame it.

What happened to you ? That is the Reframed Question I can ask myself wholeheartedly without painful emotions such as fear, sadness, anger and toxic indifference in connection to American culture. Ms. Winfrey and Doctor Perry open up their hearts wide for all readers to clearly and truthfully provide plenty of guidance and insight concerning the inner lives of people everywhere in America and the world by extension .

This book won't be for everyone as it is more instructional and digs into the weeds about mental and behavior health, and how trauma impacts everyone, especially in the early days of life. I actually found it profound, however, I struggled with listening to Dr. Perry and his way of speaking for the book. In any case, he certainly is a brilliant person and has much to offer. From this day forward, I will ask myself what happened to that person versus what is wrong with that person. I have much to learn.

I needed this book for a summer program for teachers. It was really a wake up call regarding trauma and information was so valuable. The narrators did a great job, both have a speaking style that kept my interest in a very challenging topic. Should be a must read for anyone working with children of trauma
