INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK

“Hard to put down, harder to forget.” — Stephen King, #1 New York Times bestselling author

White lies. Dark humor. Deadly consequences… Bestselling sensation Juniper Song is not who she says she is, she didn’t write the book she claims she wrote, and she is most certainly not Asian American—in this chilling and hilariously cutting novel from R.F. Kuang, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Babel.

Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars. But Athena’s a literary darling. June Hayward is literally nobody. Who wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks.

So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers during World War I.

So what if June edits Athena’s novel and sends it to her agent as her own work? So what if she lets her new publisher rebrand her as Juniper Song—complete with an ambiguously ethnic author photo? Doesn’t this piece of history deserve to be told, whoever the teller? That’s what June claims, and the New York Times bestseller list seems to agree.

But June can’t get away from Athena’s shadow, and emerging evidence threatens to bring June’s (stolen) success down around her. As June races to protect her secret, she discovers exactly how far she will go to keep what she thinks she deserves.

With its totally immersive first-person voice, Yellowface grapples with questions of diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation, as well as the terrifying alienation of social media. R.F. Kuang’s novel is timely, razor-sharp, and eminently readable.

This book was riveting! It was so hard to pause on this. Every time I thought it couldn’t get crazier, I was proven wrong. The narration was also TOP TIER! Excellent book worth every penny!

Hard to stay engaged in the story. Won’t listen to this author again. Loved the narrator, she was the ONLY reason I finished the book.

Profile Avatar mkud@comcast.net Sep 2024

More than I wanted to read about the world of publishing/cancel culture/cultural appropriation. All very good subjects but it was just on and on and on. The protagonist really became overwhelmed by the whole writing to be successful and popular cycle . This is one of those books that I wish I was reading as a hard copy so I could skim over the protagonist’s times of going down the rabbit holes of social media and her ongoing desperation to be a star in the publishing world

Profile Avatar Andrea R. Jan 2024

One of my favorite books of the year.

Profile Avatar Lila S. Jul 2023

A enjoyable thriller you can stop to hear, lots of insight about editors and writers being pressure for another book. The desire of being a best seller book.

Disappointing book

Profile Avatar Cheryl S. Apr 2026

This book lacks substance. The main character is shallow and just annoying. I wanted her to have some kind of epiphany or remorse. Some human emotion, empathy not just worrying about tweets, instas and others perception of her. I finally thought the end might have an exciting twist but that was disappointing as well

great, keep up the good work. yellow face has a great intro

Profile Avatar Fajr Jul 2023

Loved it. It was simultaneously entertaining and insightful.

Profile Avatar deszra May 2023

RF Kuang has done it again

Profile Avatar Hkopp Mar 2026

I couldn’t get through more than an hour of it because the narrator is so egotistical, hypocritical, and insufferable. At every point I hate her more. I understand that’s the point, but nothing kept me intrigued about the novel. Nothing within the plot had me wanting to know more. I don’t know, the character is done well because I deeply hate her. If you like The Catcher in the Rye this one’s for you.

Profile Avatar Calli b Mar 2026

So cringe but so good! The narrator was fabulous and really brought the story to life. Did not see the twist at the end.

Great narration

Great story

Profile Avatar Lindsey B. Jan 2026

The concept is interesting, but the characters are insufferable, the writing was heavy-handed and predictable. Lacked intrigue, charm, humanity--anything that would keep you compelled by a story with a deeply flawed protagonist. Just all cheek and no heart. If you enjoy cringe in your media media (a hate watch, reality TV, etc.,) you may enjoy this, and it's a short book. But personally, I couldn't wait for it to be over.

Profile Avatar Cactus_Nelly Jan 2026

I've enjoyed the book, but it wasn't as good as I hoped it would.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2026

I couldn’t really get into this.

Profile Avatar Sharon H. Jan 2026

L narrators voice is whining

Profile Avatar Peggy B. Jan 2026

it came highly recommended, but I kept face-palming the main character's choices

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2025

I think there’s a cardinal rule in writing that says if you’re going to have the primary character be so unlikable, at least make them interesting. The author breaks that rule. And when the book is told from the first person, and you have to live inside this insufferable woman’s head, it’s unbearable. I stopped listening halfway through, and that was giving it way too much time. As a critique of how fake and marketing driven the book industry is, I guess Yellowface works. But as a character study, I was really rooting for her to die, or at least shut the hell up.

Profile Avatar André L. Dec 2025

Fast paced book. Narrator is good, but because the main character is so unlikable you get irritated with the narrator as well

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2025

This book was ok. I laughed at this clueless narcissist. I realize it was intentional the writing perspective, learning about the Athena and June’s early relationship and how their “friendship” started and how it ended. But after a while it got tired. I never understood why people stay in these toxic and empty relationships. It was interesting getting a glimpse of how the publishing industry is. Not really surprising but interesting. It did keep you engaged at the start but at some points it drags on. . I guess I would recommend it but IDK.

This was a fascinating novel. The author covers a lot of ground with this bright but deeply disturbed and perfectly conceived character who narrates the story. Her mind is a wild place to inhabit for the duration of the novel. The narrator did a fine job bringing the story to life.

Profile Avatar Elayne C. Nov 2025

A story of insecurities and longing to belong that questions, morale, ethical, racial and legal responsibilities. It’s all tangled up in the toxicity that we call social media and fame. You hate sometimes despise the main character and find moments of empathy and understanding it’s a great read.

Moves slowly

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2025

thought it would be better but still enjoyed hating on the main chatacter

Profile Avatar MJ A. Oct 2025

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The narrator is incredibly annoying and bitter & I couldn’t stop wondering just how far she would push her game.

Profile Avatar Johntechwriter Oct 2025

A little of this guy’s endless self promotion goes a long way. How this book was recommended for me a mystery. Formulaic self-help reading experiences are something I would pay to avoid. The only motivation an unbearable half-hour of listening has provided me is to cut my losses and dump Audio Books

Profile Avatar Kirianne E. Oct 2025

It was disturbing to enter the world of this solipsistic, neurotic narrator, but I always wanted to see what would happen next. A good thriller without too much gore. The reader's character voices were amazingly varied.

Profile Avatar Judy Oct 2025

I enjoyed the writing and the narrator. It had a unique look at authors , publishers and friendships.

Profile Avatar Emily B. Sep 2025

I enjoyed this book. I think that the characters were interesting and this was a different angle to explore

The story was good , i had fun but it not every one cup of tea so if want read it , ask for it first …and i can say i like it and it my first time reading for rebecca f. Kuang

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2025

The first 2/3 of the book was very interesting. But the last third felt like the author didn’t know how to end the book. It felt contrived and rushed. Disappointing ending.

Profile Avatar Nicole Bartner Jul 2025

not a very good book. I really kept wondering if the protagonist was meant to be completely unlikable?? because she is awful. like zero redeeming qualities as a human. also? f*** Twitter. always and forever. Mostly tho...this book is so very much "like" (and in a not remotely as interesting or good or well written) as "Erasure" by Percival Everett (which is both an excellent book AND a great movie!)...ironic...no??

I really liked the book, and the narration was fantastic.

Profile Avatar gina g Jan 2025

A bit too long, it kind of makes you loose focus at times, rather than engage you. But a lot of relatable situations and feelings

Profile Avatar Diana. Dec 2024

I listened to the audiobook, I never read the book, but listening to this audio book, makes me want to buy this book and read it completely. I hope the rest of the book is going to be as good as the audio book. you should read this and I recommend this.

If you are an author or a want-to-be-author, this book is for you!

Profile Avatar Daniela A. Apr 2024

Very Millennium problematic. If you are not in that generation might be a hard listen .

Profile Avatar Julia B. Mar 2024

I saw a review about it not being easy to follow, I thought this was super easy to follow for an audiobook. I loved how there was no character that you could get attached to. It was a very interesting story line and I couldn’t put it down

Profile Avatar Sally M. Feb 2024

Beware that author takes multiple stabs at and insults “Republicans”, anyone who watches Fox News and conservatives generally. Could have told story without the self-righteous preaching. Overall a good tale but overwrought with hand-wringing on cultural appropriation and racism in publishing. Narrator pretty good but… had to read all that angst and did so, with much….angst Won’t purchase any more of this author’s books, having been insulted for my political views.

Profile Avatar Bianca1976 Feb 2024

I wasn’t going to read this book because of all the hype but I decided to listen to the audiobook. Wow this was dark but so juicy. Other than the main characters being completely unlikable, the story was really good and super enjoyable. Wasn’t what I was expecting but in really enjoyed it
