Date: March 2011

Duration: 18 hours 25 minutes

Summary:

In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.
Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

This book was 15 hours of crazy depressing non stop horrible, and 3 hours of inspiring love, healing and growth. I stuck it out, but it wasn't worth it. If I could go back in time I would not haven listened to this book. I know some people can relate to rape, divorce, cheating, weight gain, AIDS, I could go on and on. This was just too much sadness for my taste!

  • Jackie Berkowitz

One of my all time favorite books. I appreciated the subtle yet important shifts in tone for each character. I thought it was well done!

  • Tesh Kosowan

I had been meaning to read this book for years, started it but lost interests. I'm glad I listened to the audiobook. I didn't mind the narration, she was good at making her voice childlike and I could even hear the time period in her voice.

I've read this book at least six times. One of my top five all-time books. But the narration was not good and I wish I could get my credit back. Dumb purchase on my end.
