Unabridged Audiobook
After selling 1 million eBooks and audiobooks, "Peter Grainger" has finally been "discovered." That means his first million were simply by word of mouth and accidental library discoveries, I'd guess particularly during the lonely pandemic shutdown years. Perhaps it was happenstance that caused him to make Gildart Jackson his partner in success; it is impossible to imagine a narrator whose voice more surely reflects the substance of the stories. This is the latest book, #17, I believe, in a series that begins with the DC Smith series Book 1, "An Accidental Death," which can also be found here on Audiobooks.com. You really should start there in order to enjoy the full benefit of this novel. (For readers with more time and brains than I possess, you can now invest in a hardcover print version of An Accidental Death with edits required by the publisher, and compare that to what you hear in the audiobook. Then please contact me and let me know what's different.) Robert Partridge, a retired English teacher using the pseudonym "Peter Grainger," has succeeded in writing the essential British police procedural. No bloodcurdling violence, no dark, depressed, neurotic detectives, no harrowing scenes of sexual abuse, but rather a group of smart, caring people connected by their work, doing their jobs diligently with wit, wisdom, and determination. These characters and stories provide some of the light so many of us long for in these dark and frightening times. There are numerous likeable characters whose stories are interwoven into the series so that you are able to grow with them and enjoy their arc. And the scenes of nature have made readers from all over travel to the Norfolk countryside so they can see the place in person. By all means, buy this book. But you'll enjoy it even more if you start with the first one and grow with the series.
